Muriel Bernice "Bea" Bates Lash Abegg, 75, of McLouth, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2015 with her devoted husband of 36 years, Karl T. Abegg, and her children at her side. She was born March 10, 1939 in Carrizozo, New Mexico, the youngest of seven children, to Walter R. and Verna Cowan Bates. She was a member of her beloved First Baptist Church of McLouth, and loved to sing in the choir. Muriel, affectionately known as "Bea," loved to crochet, cross-stitch, grow beautiful flowers, sing, read, can jelly, travel and share her deep love and faith in God with her family. She worked for ten years as a housekeeper at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. She was married to Don Lash, who preceded her in death. She was married to Karl T. Abegg on January 1, 1979 at McLouth, and he survives at the home. She is also survived by her five children, Patti Lash Brown (Roger), Perry, Susan Lash, Independence, MO., Donna Lash Wolff (Joe), Kansas City, KS, Mark Lash, McLouth and Leslie Lash White (Rob), Overland Park, two brothers, Elbert Bates, Duncan, AZ, Willie Bates, Lakeside, OR, two sisters, Lois Bates Preece, Las Cruces, N.M., and Dorothy Bates Lee, Ruidoso, N.M. Bea was proud of her 17 grandchildren, R.J., Lindsay, Lorelei (Josh), Erek, Bailee, Peyton, Tarah, Hadley, Nicolas, Alex, Ethan, Sean, Dawn, Angela, Amber, Daine, and David, and five great-grandchildren (Jenna, Tayber, Beckham, Avery and Kailyn), five step-children, Anne Annis (Mike), Lisa Abegg, Geoffrey Abegg, Heidi Abegg-Bartels (Frank) and Daniel Abegg (Mindy), 10 step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews as well as dear friends and coffee buddies. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Rachael Bates Storey and Viola Bates Wilkinson and her first husband, Don Lash. Services to celebrate her life will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 9, at the First Baptist Church, McLouth, where a visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, Monday prior to services at the Church. Burial will be at McLouth Cemetery. Mrs. Abegg will lie in state from 12:00 to 4:00 PM, Sunday at Barnett Family Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.
