Vernell "Bus" Walker, who retired from Ideal Cemetery after 30 years, died Tuesday at a local nursing facility. He was 79.
Walker, a native of Covington County, was a resident of Theodore and a former resident of Andalusia, Ala.
He was a commercial farmer and livestock producer for most of his life. Also, he and his family ran a garbage business in south Mobile County for a number of years. Walker was a descendant of two pioneer families of Covington and Escambia counties, according to relatives. He was a member of the Three C's. He served as a merchant mariner with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Survivors include four sons, Perry "Vernell" Walker, Michael D. Walker and Kenneth Walker, all of Mobile, and Dennie Ray Walker of Grand Bay; two daughters, Doris Brenda Hamilton and Deborah Ann Lee, both of Theodore; three sisters, Betty Meyers and Catherine Odom, both of Andalusia, and Eloise Dunlap Scroggins of Theodore; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Gilmer's Funeral Home on Zeigler Boulevard, where the service is set for 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
