PROVIDENCE - Santo Amato, of 11 Aldine St., emergency management director for the State of Rhode Island through both the 1973 energy crisis and the Blizzard of '78, died Monday at Roger Williams Medical Center.

He was the husband of Claudia M. (Henderson) Amato. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Augustino and Rose (Olivo) Amato.

Mr. Amato, known as Sandy, was employed by the state from 1957 until 1986. He began his career in 1957 as a crash rescue crewman at T.F. Green Airport, and was promoted to lieutenant of the crash rescue team in 1958. He joined the Rhode Island Civil Preparedness Agency in 1962, serving as a civil defense radiological officer. In 1973, during the energy crisis, he was appointed fuel allocation officer for the state.

In 1975 he was appointed deputy director of the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency, and then became its director from 1977 until he retired in 1986. As director, he coordinated the state's response during the Blizzard of 1978.

During 1987 and 1988, he worked with the City of Providence's Emergency Management Agency as its hazardous materials coordinator.

Prior to his state service, he worked for the Providence Fire Department and for the Providence Tribune.

He was a graduate of Classical High School and Providence College.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Robert S. Amato of Johnston; a daughter, Patricia F. Swanson of North Kingstown; two sisters, Marie Lobello of North Providence and Lydia Pelosi of Providence; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Salvatore Amato.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius Church, Eaton Street. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
