Professional Soccer Player. 1954 FIFA World Cup Champion. 1951 and 1953 German Champion. Central defender. He played his entire professional club career with one team, his hometown 1 FC Kaiserslautern, with 355 games and 28 goals from 1945 to 1962, rising through the youth ranks to the top team. He was one of five Kaiserslautern players to represent Germany in the 1954 FIFA World Cup, winning the final vs Hungary 3-2 in what has been called "The Miracle of Bern" (Das Wunder von Bern) and was also noted for his tackle that injured Hungarian star Ferenc Puskás in a preliminary round match, which affected Puskás' play in the final. In all he played 16 times for Germany with zero goals. After his career, he was a postal official and businessman and also coached Kaiserslautern's amateur team. He was also known for his interim role as the pro team's head coach for eight games in the 1964-1965 season, saving them from relegation to the second division.
