Major League Baseball Player, Coach. For five seasons (1950 to 1954), he played at the outfielder, third baseman and first baseman positions with the St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles. Born Donald Eugene Lenhardt, he played collegiate baseball at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Washington University in St. Louis. During World War II, he served with the United States Navy. Selected by the Browns during the 1946 Amateur Draft, he marked his Major League debut on April 15, 1950. That year, he produced a career-high 131 hits, including 22 home runs and 81 RBIs in 139 games played. In 481 regular season games, he compiled 401 hits with a .271 lifetime batting average. Following his retirement as a player, he remained in the sport and served as a longtime scout with the Red Sox. He returned to the field to serve on Boston's coaching staff from 1970 to 1973.
