Friends Bear Body to Forest Park Cemetery Grave

Long-time friends of R.R. Neyland, Sr., 75, veteran Greenville attorney will bear his body to a grave in Forest Park cemetery this afternoon. Mr. Neyland, a pioneer of the legal profession in this section of the state and for years one of the leading citizens of Greenville and Hunt-co, died Monday evening.

The funeral services were held at 2 o'clock at the Neer and LyBrand chapel, on South Wesley st conducted by the Rev. C.J. Kinsolving, III, of St. Paul's Episcopal church here, assisted by the Rev. Harold Hennessy, Episcopalian Rector of Paris.

Active pallbearers were Frank Riegger, Clarence Bendel, Tom Reed Poole, Cass Andrews, Hal C. Horton, Dan Dansby, George Betts and R.E. King. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Hunt County Bar Association.

Mr. Neyland's death was attributed directly to heart disease, however, he had been in ill health for the past several months. His condition was thought to have been improved a few days ago and his son, Major Robert R. Neyland, who had come here to be at his father's bedside, has returned to his duty with the U.S. Army. Major Neyland was enroute to a Panama assignment when news of his father's death reached him and he was not able to return for the funeral services.

Robert Reese Neyland, a native Texan, was born at Woodville, Tyler-co on Oct. 25, 1859. Early in life he chose the practice of law as a career and by dint of hard work and unceasing efforts became one of the best known attorneys in the state.

First, Mr. Neyland studied law under the late T.J. Brown, who was later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas. He received his first literary training in a school taught by his mother in Jasper and spent two years as a student at the Kingston Collegiate Institute in Canada, returning to Texas and entering the practice of law in Greenvill (sic) about 1881, forming a partnership with the late Judge J.J. Matthews.

In 1897 he formed a partnership with his brothers (sic), Mayo W. Neyland and the firm Neyland and Neyland became one of the most successful in this part of the sate (sic). Until recently Mr. Neyland remained an active member of the firm, representing it in many important matters of litigation.

On April 3, 1889, Mr. Neyland was married to Miss Pauline Lewis at Marshall and she preceded him in death a little more than two years ago. Surviving are three children, Mrs. Maury Robinson of Paris, Mayo W. Neyland, Jr. of this city, and Major Robert R. Neyland of the United States Army. Also surviving are one brother, Mayo W. Neyland of Greenville and six grandchildren, Catherine Morgan of Paris, Robert Reese Neyland III, and Iewis (sic) Fitch Neyland of New York, and Robert R. Neyland, Ammon Neyland and Mayo W. Neyland, III.

Mr. Neyland was familiarly known to many of his friends as "Judge." He was possessed of a genial disposition that won him a host of friends. He was always kind and considerate of his friends and acquaintances and his greatest love was for his family. At all times was he concerned as to their welfare and his greatest object in life was to see that they were comfortable.

Many years ago Mr. Neyland joined St. Paul's Episcopal church here and was ever faithful to the tenets of its teaching. He was also a life member of the Greenville Masonic Lodge and for a number of years was active in several branches of the Masonic order.
