If ever a name and a person were meant for each other, it was Jewel. A beautiful smile, sparkling eyes and love worth a million. Jewel Allums was born to Milford Tipton Fullerton and Minnie Hoffman Fullerton on January 15, 1914 in Roosevelt County, New Mexico. She was the only girl among a family of six brothers: Carl, Walter, Edgar, Roy, Claude and Milford Tipton, Jr. Preceded in death by her brothers and her parents, Jewel was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She died at just over 100 years old in Wichita Falls, Texas, on May 7, 2014.
Blessed with a spirit of adventure and enthusiasm, Jewel's adult life began with her marriage to A. W. Seale. They had been introduced by a mutual friend in Vernon, Texas where both were living at the time. On August 5, 1934, they were married in Frederick, Oklahoma (where parental consent was not required) as were many young couples from Texas across the Red River.
After living in several places in their early marriage, A.W. and Jewel made their home in Electra, Texas in 1948. The family became son, Don; and daughters, Linda and Jody. Mother Jewel was a natural caretaker, a quality that defined her for the rest of her life. Her children's friends were her friends. Many the time she cut the girls' friends' hair or gave them perms. Her reputation for being a good cook was confirmed by the amount of meals and goodies consumed by her children and their friends. In fact, Jewel was known far and wide for her great cooking which she shared with great joy.
Always active in the Southern Baptist church wherever she lived, Jewel took on leadership roles with ease and devotion.
By 1967, A.W. Seale was ready to get out of the oil business in North Texas. He had a passionate love for the mountains so off he and Jewel went to cool Colorado Springs, Colorado. Just a few days after their 36th anniversary, A. W. died on August 26, 1970. Jewel went to work in real estate in Colorado getting her license in 1971 and working until 1973.
On December 30, 1973, Jewel Seale married Klause Abegg in Colorado Springs where they lived until his death in 1994. Jewel returned to Wichita Falls, Texas later that year and lived at Rolling Meadows. She married Kary Allums in 1996 and moved with him to Electra where he later died in 2005. Her children look back and say that she had three wonderful husbands-and she took care of each of them. For the last years of her life, she lived at Horizon Bay.
The members of this family greatly loved Jewel's sense of adventure and her willingness to explore and try new things. Moving to a new place was exciting to her and when grandchildren and great grandchildren came to visit, they were surprised with her picnics, camping, inner tubes on the river, playing dress up or looking for fool's gold. It might be making mud pies or sitting on her back porch feeding a little black squirrel she had befriended. Christmas gifts meant ornaments for the family trees where they will appear again this year.
In addition to her parents, brothers, husbands, Jewel was preceded in death by granddaughters Angela Howton Russell and Cammie Seale and great grandson Alex Sheppard.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Don and Benetha Seale of Electra; Linda and Presley Sheppard of Austin; and Jody and Billy Bob Howton of Granbury. Eight grandchildren and their spouses. Nineteen great grandchildren. Stepchildren Karl, Roger and Barbara; several step grand and great grandchildren; sister-in-law Peggy Harris of Vernon, Texas and several nieces and nephews.
