The Lord opened His arms and welcomed home His son, Melbert Richard Baechler, 96, who died on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, following a long illness. Mel was born October 9, 1909, to Ernest and Rose (Baumgartner) Baechler on the family farm west of Elgin. He spent his early years farming with his father and then with his brother Alf. Later he drove school bus for the Valley School District and worked with his brother-in-law, Bob Robbins, with his whitewashing business. He was united in marriage to Ruby (Robbins Benson) on August 8, 1959. Mel and Ruby spent time traveling and enjoying seeing most of the United States and a lot of Canada. Most of their winters were spent in the Rio Grande Valley, of Texas. They especially loved their "little home in the valley", where they entertained countless friends and relatives with at least a "cup of coffee and a cookie", probably a game of some sort followed, annd Mel always seemed to be the lucky player. Mel is survived by his beloved Ruby; her three children, Verla (Newell) McIntyre, West Union, Thomas B. (MaryLou) Benson, Tripoli and Beverly (Robert) Yancey, Cedar Rapids; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. They all knew him as their "Grandpa Mel". He is also survived by his sisters, Helen Muehlethaler, Stewartville, MN and Clara Whitford, West Union and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Alf of Clermont and John of California and two sisters, Selma Kohls, Elgin and Mary Jennings, Wadena. Our hearts will always feel the loss but all we need is to remember Mel with his beautiful smile, and our hearts will be lighter.
