Erva Maitland, a lifelong resident of Peck, passed away Friday, December 13, 2013, surrounded by her family. Erva was born April 4, 1925, in the family home to Charles and Mary Belle (Wilson) Hunt. On July 5, 1952, she and William (Bill) Maitland were married in the Melvin Methodist Church. They farmed and raised their family on the farm near Peck. Growing up Erva attended Shooks Country School, and played in the family band for local parties and receptions.
She was the typical farm wife and mother of her time, devoting herself to raising her family and being at home on the farm. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, baking and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spent many hours baking molasses and chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren. In 2012, she and Bill celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at a surprise party with their family and neighbors attending.
She is survived by her husband Bill, and children, Charles (Sarah) Maitland of Melvin, Carolyn (Mark) Fairman, Peck, Dale Maitland, Melvin, and Marilyn (Rex) Strickler of Peck, 14 grandchildren, Jason Van Brande, Rochelle Stevens, Jennifer Mott, Roxanne Nugent, Bill Maitland, Nikki Hendershot, Josh Strickler, Justin Fairman, Bob Maitland, Michelle Wordon, Brandon Fairman, Erin Maitland, Dylan Fairman and Jim Maitland, 16 great grandchildren: Dustin Schoen, Emily Van Brande, Brookelyn Mott, Nick Van Brande, Lauren Mott, Caryn Stevens, Miranda Stevens, Paul Van Brande, Carly Hendershot, Lillie Fairman, Colin Maitland, Camyrn Hendershot, Lillie Maitland, William VanBrande, Willa Wordon and Evelyn Strickler; a sister Julia Smith, sisters-in-law Pat Hunt, Mary Gunn, Jean (Jim) McLeod, Mildred McElroy and brother-in-law, Alex Maitland, many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sisters Lucille & Nora and brothers Glenn & Elmer Hunt, son-in-law, Albert "Junior" Van Brande. Other brother and sister-in-laws that have passed, George Hirons, Dwight Elston, Daniel Smith, Robert McElroy, Walter Gunn, Shirley Maitland, Hugh and Edna Maitland.
A visitation will be held Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Carman Funeral Home in Brown City from 10:00 am to 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will be following the visitation 1:00 p.m. at Carman Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. Memorials can be made to the United Hospice of Marlette.
