Thomas E. Barton (September 26, 1925 - June 14, 1980) A funeral service for Thomas E. Barton, of Montclair, New Jersey, a director and owner of the international insurance brokerage of Johnson & Higgins, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 1980, at Central Presbyterian Church, at Claremont, Avenue and Park Street in Montclair, New Jersey. Mr. Barton died of a sudden illness on Saturday evening, June 14, 1980 while playing golf at the Montclair Golf Club. A Montclair resident for the past 10 years, he was 54. Memorial graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 1980, at City Cemetery in Shiner, Texas, with the Reverend W.W. Connally, pastor of First Baptist Church in Yoakum, officiating. Buffington Funeral Home of Yoakum is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Barton was the principal expert on property insurance at Johnson & Higgins, the nation's oldest insurance brokerage with 5,000 employees worldwide. He also had extensive experience in industrial insurance. Born in Marlin, Texas, on Saturday, September 26, 1925, he became an insurance underwriter shortly after World War II with Industrial Risk Insurors, a group of 80 insurance companies that had previously been known as the Factory Insurance Association. Mr. Barton was a graduate of Yoakum (Texas) High School, and Texas A&M University. He interrupted study for an engineering degree at Texas A&M University in order to serve in the Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps during the war. He worked in the insurance field ever since his college graduation. He married Mary Keith Moore on Saturday, May 19, 1951, in Dallas, Texas, at the home of Mary Keith's uncle, J.B. Cornelison. In 1967, Mr. Barton joined the Texas subsidiary of Johnson & Higgins. Three years later, he transferred to the headquarters of the 135-year old firm in New York City. In 1973, he was elected a director and owner of the brokerage. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Pauline Frances Burkett Barton Dixon, who died four months ago in Yoakum, Texas (January 26, 1904 - February 15, 1980); and by his father, Charles Esley Barton, in 1972 (December 9, 1899 – September 16, 1972). He is survived by his wife, Mary Keith Barton of Montclair, New Jersey; four children – Charles Barton of Miami, Florida, and Thomas M.
