William enlisted age 45 from Potsdam, New York as a Private in Company "K", 92nd New York Infantry on 2 December 1861. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Seven Pines near Richmond on 31 May 1862, and taken to a prison facility, where he died.

He was buried on 9 June 1862, in the same area just to the east of Shockoe Hill Cemetery, as were about 600 other Union POWs and about a dozen Unionist civilians. Their remains were disinterred in 1866-67 by the Federal government, and reinterred at Richmond National Cemetery. William rests today under an "Unknown" marker.

A memorial marker at Shockoe Hill Cemetery honors those POWs. His was among the minority of soldiers whose names were recorded; it appears as "William Kein," as it was recorded at the time of burial. For more on the POWs and their marker, see https://soldiersofshockoehill.com.
