It is probable there were burials prior to 1874, but no records remain and most of the graves were marked with native limestone rocks without inscriptions. It is estimated that the remains of at least sixty people who once called Cherokee home, now lie on this rustic hill top. When a survey of the cemetery was made in 1970, there were over 50 recognizable graves. A dowser found evidence of graves scattered down the sloping hillside. Only 16 of the 45 marked graves have names inscribed on the markers today.
This cemetery was unused and neglected for almost 80 years. However, in 1993 efforts were made to restore and preserve the cemetery. Many interested individuals donated time and money to this effort and in 1994 a sturdy enclosure fence was erected around what remains of the cemetery, but not the sloping hillside which at one time had visible graves. A Montgomery Cemetery sign was placed over the entrance gate at this time. On April 25, 1995 a dedication ceremony was held in memory of pioneers who are buried in this historic place.
In 2016, Historic Texas Cemetery Designation was obtained and in 2021 the Historic Marker was erected.
