Add PhotosThe cemetery is on the lands that old Hardy Horn (c1780-c1865) acquired by 1820, when he and his wife, Annis Hill, moved across the state line from Robeson County, North Carolina into Marion (now Dillon) County, South Carolina. The land had been part of a 500 acre land grant to John Price in 1796.
This old, lost cemetery was located by the account of their 2nd great grandson, Mr. Edward Currie (deceased), who resided on this land all his life, and who in the 1990s pointed out the location of the old cemetery where he had been told his grandmother's Horn granddparents, Hardy and Annis, were buried. The stones had been plowed over decades earlier and no trace of the cemetery remained, he said. In 2017 a neighbor, Mr. Arnette, remembered and described the cemetery. He said there had been half a dozen or so stone markers in the cemetery in the northeast corner of that field up toward the woods. Mr. Arnette's last memory of it was when he was a youth, about 70 years ago, confirming Mr. Currie's memory of the graveyard.
There may very well be other early families buried in this cemetery, possibly including members of the family of Nathan Price (presumed brother of Hardy Horn) whose lands bounded on Hardy's lands, and perhaps members of the Price family who previously owned the land, or the family of old Zadock Yelverton/Elvington whose lands bounded Hardy somewhere near this field. No cemetery has ever been discovered for the families of those other three men, nor is it known where they are buried.
