Owens Cemetery
Lawrence County, Tennessee, USA
Rd., (Hwy 98) and again left (east). Go several miles. Turn east (left) on Hood Hollow Road. Follow that for about 3 & 1/2 miles to Appleton, turn or merge left onto Appleton Road and go about a mile passing the junction of Blooming grove road along the way. Next the road bends back left (north) again and the Dobbins Cemetery will be on your right. Continue north about a 1/2 mile to the West Fork Creek of sugar creek and Sugar Creek. Cross the Creek (with permission) and turn left (west) and go (walk or 4 wheel) about 3/4 mile along the edge of an open field which can follow the West Fork Creek to the base of a hill. Climb the hill and find the cemetery in a grove of trees at the top. After you reach the top of the hill on the field road the cemetery is nearby.
Sadly I have been informed that Mr. Harrison the land owner who showed this cemetery to the Sue Davis & Linda Dean has passed away. Sue was told the new owner wants to close off the road after Dobbins Cemetery to make it private and he also said no one would be allowed to cross his private land. How ugly. Its hard enough to get to this cemetery having to ford a creek and climb a hill nearly a mile away, much less a land owner with an onerous attitude toward visitors who wish him no harm and will probably only ask for a survey about once every 10 years and make some effort to preserve this cemetery in the process.

First time of the two visits I (Sue Davis) made to this cemetery I thought the Appleton tombstones were very pretty marble stones. The last time I went something had pawed in the Owens grave, Probably a horse pawing it. [Sue Davis, year 1980 & 31 Jul 2000.]
Sue Hendrix Davis and Linda Jo Hendrix Dean last read the Owen Cemetery on 31 July 2000. Larry Harrison drove his tractor to the cemetery, and we followed in a four wheel drive truck through the creek, mud holes, fields and up a hill close to the Devil's Backbone. (Devils Backbone center at GPS: N 35.04282 W 87.23183). The Owens cemetery was located on this same hill. We were able to drive the truck right up to the cemetery, and didn't have to climb any fences or go through any briar patches. All graves of the Owens family members had mummy shaped stone vaults on top of the ground. One vault had apparently been repaired. I(Sue) had been to the cemetery years before and said this particular vault had pieces broken off as if something hard had hit or pawed it. There wasn't any writing on it.
The story handed down through the years is that John Robert Owens made all these stone vaults himself, being an adept stone carver. [Sue Davis, year 31 Jul 2000]
I have not been to this cemetery, but am fairly confident of the correctness of the GPS location mapped out here. Unfortunately the three entrances to this cemetery are marked by a failed bridges and requires either fording the Sugar creek or in good weather a 4 wheeled drive high wheeled vehicle.
