The original town of Smithfield on the north side of the Barron River was established in the late 1870s soon after the establishment of Cairns but was abandoned after succesive floods in the 1880s. The Smithfield cemetery today contains only one marked grave which is indecipherable. No burial records remain other than newspaper reports and Death Certificates. It is maintained by Cairns Regional Council as a small area of parkland.
