Kirby Cemetery
Mount Pleasant, Titus County, Texas, USA
is commonly referred to as the old Paris road. If ever a cemetery cried out
for preservation, perhaps this one heads the list. Located in a large pasture
or currently hay meadow, the simplistic surroundings give way to a grand
ornate wrought iron fence. A large deciduous tree shades the grave and
occupies one corner of the cemetery.
The rages of time and the elements have faded the grandeur of cemetery. The
elements of the fence are deeply rusted and parts of the fence are
depressingly bent, most likely by incursions of farm implements. Gophers and
moles working over the many years have raised the ground level almost two feet
from the surrounding terrain and in the process almost buried the ornate
tombstone. The tombstone has also been broken from its pedestal and, when
found, been partially submerged. It is an ornate tombstone and must have been
a classic in its time. All the engravings have withstood the ravages of the
elements and the lettering is easily read. The local paper, Mount Pleasant
Daily Tribune, in its April 20, 1980 edition ran a picture of this tombstone
on page 10 of that edition.
It is difficult to tell how many are buried in this cemetery. Lynch Harper in
his "Titus County Cemeteries" says that old timers in the area thought that
there are four graves in the enclosure.
The cemetery can be reached from the Titus County court house by going west on
West 1st Street for 0.3 mile to the intersection with Edwards Avenue. Turn
right (North) on Edwards and proceed for 1.6 miles across US 67 and under
Interstate 30 to a fork in the Road. Take the right fork (Old Paris Road) and
continue 1.4 miles. The cemetery lies about 100 yards to the right (East) of
the Old Paris Road surrounded by pasture land. Coordinates: 33o11.552'N
094o59.947'W
