In 1877 the estate was divided and the piece of land which surrounds the cemetery went to Thomas Smith, Jr. who died in 1880. He is most likely buried here. Although only three headstones and two bases remain, ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey conducted in September 2015 shows at least ten interments. Among them are probably Mary "Polly" Medearis Smith, wife of Thomas, Sr., and daughter of Capt. John T. Medearis, a third cousin of President George Washington and Elizabeth C Smith Kinnard, wife of William Kinnard and mother of Howard.
The platted, surveyed, and deeded size of the cemetery was 22/100 acre. In 1877 it was deeded in Volume 36, Page 309 of the Dallas County Deed Records as the Smith Family Graveyard and was set out from the rest of the land. In 1965, 0.035 acre (16%) was taken from the NE corner by eminent domain for the Interstate 45 project.
The duplicates of Thomas C Durrett and Martha Jerusha Smith Durrett were each originally created as a "Burial Unknown" (a violation of FAG rules) and moved here later. Rice Durrett was alive in 1887 when he attended a Civil War reunion in Dallas; he lived in Shackelford County, Texas, in 1885.
