Durant Cemetery
Also known as Grissette Landing
Conway, Horry County, South Carolina, USA
In the early 1900s this portion of the property was part of a dairy farm. The cemetery, located on the edge of a bluff overlooking Rose Lake was quite large, but only a few grave markers had survived. When Elting and Margaret Holliday built their home there they gathered up several stones for their protection and placed them flat on the ground near others that were standing in the center of their circular driveway. Another grave is still marked on the north side of the house. Most of the graves are now unmarked, having probably been originally marked with wood markers. The cemetery is connected to the Durant, Readman, Grissette and Holliday families of Horry County, South Carolina.
In the early and mid-1800s, river landings on the property were used for shipping products that were associated with the local naval stores and lumber industries to Georgetown.
The above cemetery description was provided by Ben Burroughs of Horry County Historical Society and Director of Horry County Archives Center at Coastal Carolina University.
Cemetery and home are located about 200 yards off of HWY. 905.
