There are several family names on the markers at Tomlinson. While the markers are badly worn, there are excellent resources for locating individuals. Headstone inscriptions were documented by the Daughters on the American Revolution
in 1957, and again in 1985.
Visiting Tomlinson
Now called the Tomlinson Pioneer Cemetery Prairie, the site was given protected status in 1985 when it was declared an Illinois Nature Preserve. This designation was sought by Elisabeth Hanson and her husband who became de facto stewards of the site in 1977. Today it is overseen by the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission as one of the few protected prairies in the area.
Visitors must contact the Illinois DNR for permission to visit the cemetery.
As of the Summer of 2017, there was no gate restricting access to the road that leads to the cemetery.
The dirt road off of CR 2700 E that leads to cemetery access is about a mile long, runs beside a fence, and is badly rutted by farm machinery.
The road ends at an old machine shed and an old abandoned house. One will be able to see the cemetery in the distance from here.
From the machine shed, walk a path that runs beside the farm field for less than a mile. It leads to the cemetery.
