Records differ but Upper Germantown Burying Ground was established in 1724 when a half-acre was donated for "any folks of different religions" to be buried. Other records have it being established in 1683 and believe it was then called Ax Burial Ground and on the property of the Ax family)
No records were kept prior to 1756 although some tombstones remained with earlier dates. Between 1756 and 1780 a George Schreiber kept the records. George wrote only in German and spelled the names in proper German. Over the years, names were changed to English versions and so often there will be alternate spellings of the same name. Revolutionary soldiers were honored with newer tombstones which are in English, while the records of their deaths will have the German spelling, (Rittchert Raab's tombstone is listed as Richard Rabb.)
George listed most women as "wife of", or not at all, and children were only counted in the totals and not listed by name. In 1780 the job was turned over to another, and the records were now changed from German to English.
Germantown Upper Burying Grounds was the last resting place of 58 American Revolutionary War who died during the Battle of Germantown.
