John Henry Nail was born May 2, 1838 to John and Lucinda Ellison Nail in Jackson Co., Ohio. He married Mary Ann Horton October 20, 1866 in Jackson Co., Ohio. They had the following children - Oscar, Cora, Sarah Josephine, Margaret "Maggie", and Ella Emma (my grandmother). John Henry served in the Civil War in the Union Army enlisting September 10, 1862 with Company H, 117th Infantry Regiment. He transferred in Company H, 1st Heavy Artillery REgiment Ohio on August 12, 1863, mustered out Company H, 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment Ohio on July 25, 1865 in Knoxville, TN. His unit numbers were 1740 and 1718.
