Sampson was a mine agent and was returning from Johannesberg, South Africa on board the ship Saxon, which was bound for his homeland of England, when he died of "pithisis" (commonly known as tuberculosis). He was buried at sea off the coast of Namibia.
One son, Leonard, preceded him in death.
Surviving were his wife, Ellen "Nellie" Bunney Jeffery and two sons, Percy and Herbert "Bert" and two daughters, Emma "Helen" and Florence.

Sampson was a longtime member of the Mason's when he died.
