A Biographical Sketch of a Notable Colored Minister
The mother (a slave) had been sold and being heavy with child was not compelled as others to walk to the plantation of her owner but was placed in an ox-cart and when mid-way between the plantation of her former and future home, she gave birth to a man child and named him ABRAHAM!
Thus like the Saviour whom he preached so effectively, Abraham Grant could boast of the humblest birth. Bishop Grant was great in his goodness, his earnestness and simplicity. He came from the thralldom of American slavery, walking from a Florida plantation to the highest position within the province of man to give in the Church of God: the Bishopric.

President, Financial Bd., Washington.Born Aug. 25, 1848, at Lake City Fla.; was a slave and was sold at Columbus, Ga. for $6,000 Confed. Money; after war, returned to Florida, clerked in a grocery store of former owner and spent few hours daily in a missionary school; later steward in hotels at Lake City and Jacksonville, Fla. attended night school at Cookman Inst., a short ime. Licensed to preach, A.M.E. Ch., April 3, 1873; elder, March 4, 1876; while in Jacksonville, was insp. of customs, and apptd. by Gov. Stearns Co. Commr., Duval Co.; Transferred to Texas, 1878; pastor at San Antonio and Austin; became presiding elder and vice-pres. Paul Quinn College, Waco, Texas; elected bishop, May 24, 1888.Was bishop consecutively of 9th, 1st and 4th districts; was president 4 years, Bd. Publication, A.M.E. Ch., Philadelphia; has been president Ch. Extension Bd. A.M.E. Ch. 12 years. Member Ecumenical Meth. Conf., Washington, 1891; presided over confs. at West Coast Africa, Feb., 1899; mem. Ecumenical Missionary conf., New York, 1900. Ecumenical Meth. Conf. London, 1900.Married Oct. 23, 1902, to Mrs. L. R. Armstrong of Houston, Texas.
