Samuel was eight years old when his father died. Following the custom of the times, his mother apprenticed him to a farmer who proved to be a cruel and a hard taskmaster.
At the age of 13, he ran away and joined a fishing crew that went north for six months at a time. Finally, because of injuries, he was forced to quit. He then became an apprentice to a cabinet maker who required him to work three years for free to pay for his instruction. He lived by making and selling toys.
While he was learnig the furniture trade in the late 40's, he had a dream in which he saw a church split assunder with a man standing above the church spire. Later when he met the missioniaries, he picked out Joseph Smith as the man standing above the spire.
Shortley after being taught by the missionaries, he and his mother and all her other children were baptized. He served as a local missionary until he immigrated to America.
