He married Susie Wakeman on May 26, 1945, in Cloquet. He was a member and trustee of St. John's Lutheran Church in Saginaw. He worked for Diamond Match in Cloquet, Twig Lumber for 36 years and for Silver Bay Construction where he retired. After his retirement he worked as a security guard for Wrenshall Oil Refinery.
Melvin was a member of the Teamsters Union 346 in Duluth.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie in 1993; his parents; and a brother, Ervin, in 1982.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Tom) Hoffman; brothers: Roy, Lester, Elmer (Joyce) and Norman (Charlene); sisters: Dora Ahlgren and Sarah Trader; grandchildren: Christy and Mark Hoffman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial in St. John's Cemetery, Saginaw.
