He graduated from Alborn High School in 1944 and joined the Army that same year. Roy was a member of Cannon Troop, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division during WWII, serving in the Philippines and Japan, including witnessing the surrender of Japan from a distance. After he returned, he married Delores E. Johnson on July 14, 1951 in Duluth and they made their home in Hermantown in a home Roy built for his family.
Roy was a member of Iron Workers Local 512, spending much of it working as a job foreman for Reuben Johnson and Son. He was very proud to look out at the Duluth area and see many structures he helped build; the work he was proudest of was the original radio tower at Palisade Head outside of Silver Bay.
Roy enjoyed hunting with the Floodwood gang, watching NASCAR, fishing, and snowmobiling at his home on Lake Vermilion. He also loved a good cup of coffee with family and friends. A special place for him was the Northwestern Gun Club where he spent many years working and competing. A man of very few words, Roy had many construction skills. He also gave of his time and talents to Hermantown Boy Scout Troop 105 and helped build a youth baseball field in the family neighborhood in the 1960’s.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores; siblings, Melvin, Ervin, Lester, Norman and Dora and their spouses.
He is survived by one son, Roger (Kathy); daughter, Patsy Amborn; grandchildren: Reid (Erica) Amborn and Danielle Amborn; two great grandchildren; brother, Elmer (Joyce) Amborn; sister, Sarah Trader; and many nieces and nephews; and his so called adopted daughters, Jorgine, Carla, Sue and Karen.
