Mrs. Katherine Goode Goforth died Sunday, February 26, 2012 after a brief illness. She was born in Cleveland County September 8, 1922, the third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Goode. Katherine was raised in the Beulah Church community with her two sisters Mary Schenck and Ruth. During her childhood, Katherine met the love of her life, Samuel Pannell Goforth, whom she married in 1942.
Katherine loved her family, her friends and her church. She enjoyed the adventure of travel and was always ready for new sights, but her happiest times were at home. Her household was a hub of activity for family and friends. It was alive with laughter, stories and home cooked meals and was frequented by her thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Each grandchild loved "Mama Kat". She developed a special relationship with each and each has their own funny Mama Kat story to tell.
Katherine was a loving, caring friend and was blessed with many wonderful friendships. She was especially close to her sister-in-law Sophie Goforth. Together with Sam, Sophie's husband Joe Goforth founded a successful business in Shelby which is now known as Southco Industries.
Katherine was a devout Christian and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was a dedicated parishioner in three congregations during her lifetime: Beulah where she was raised, Sulphur Springs during much of her adulthood and Aldersgate for the past forty years. At Aldersgate United Methodist Katherine was a faithful member of the Bayliss Sunday School Class and was especially devoted to service on the Congregational Care Committee. She was also an active member of Cleveland Springs Garden Club.
Katherine was predeceased by her husband Samuel Pannell Goforth, her sisters Mary Schenck Goode Goforth and Ruth Goode Mills and daughter-in-law Carolyn B. Goforth. Katherine and Sam were blessed with five children: Steve Goforth; Kaye Goforth Lowery and her husband Richard; Dennis Goforth and his wife Peggy; Richard Goforth and his wife Linda; and Susan Goforth Porter and her husband Bill.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 27, 2012 from 6:00 p.m until 7:30. at Cecil Burton Funeral Home, 106 Cherryville Rd., Shelby, NC.
