History of Isaac Pointer
by Blytha (Dennis) Ellis.

Isaac Pointer was born about 1782 in the State of Maryland. He married Hannah Jarman in Maryland on March 3, 1802. They had 5 children born in Maryland before they moved to Pickaway, Ohio: John 1803, Betsy 1804, Richard 1806, Mary Ann 1807, Shadrick 1809. In Ohio, one child was born Gertrude 1811.

It is believed that Hannah (Jarman) Pointer died between 1811 and 1813, which was after the birth of Gertrude and prior to Isaac’s second marriage in 1813.

On August 31, 1813, in the State of Delaware, Isaac Pointer married Mariam Graham, daughter of Robert Graham (1750-1813) and Miriam (Brown) (1756-1813) of Kent, Delaware. It is unknown how Isaac met Mariam but it seems he must have traveled back to Delaware from Ohio to marry her. Apparently, they returned to live in Pickaway, Ohio as three of their children were born there, Martha 1814, Nancy 1815, and Justus 1817.

When Justus Pointer was about 4 months old (born in June 1817) his family decided to move further west. They settled in Honey Creek Township of Vigo County, Indiana in October of 1817 on land called the Lambert Place. It was near the Hull Cemetery. There, Isaac and his sons farmed and accumulated a considerable amount of land, according to a history book of Vigo County. It is believed that the Pointers had 3 more children born in this location: James 1819, Sarah 1820, and Barnabas 1823.

In the 1830 census, Isaac’s household consisted of himself age 40-50, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20, and his wife Miriam age 40-50.

In about 1835, Miriam (Graham) Pointer died. There are 4 more marriages filed in Maryland listsing an Isaac Pointer, but it is unknown if this is our Isaac. These are the women who married an Isaac Pointer and the dates: Nettie Newton on February 9, 1836, Mary Moore in 1837, Jane Cain in 1838, Polly Copeland in 1850. It is unknown whether these are all wives of this Isaac.

In the 1840 census of Honey Creek, Vigo County, Indiana, the household consisted of Isaac age 60-70, 1 male 15-20, 2 males 20-30, 1 female under 5, 1 female 15-20, and 2 females 20-30.

In 1850, the census system began listing names of household members instead of just age categories. However, most of the Pointer children were out of the home by then. Isaac is 68 and his daughter Gertrude is 39. Barnabas, a son, is age 27. They also seem to have taken in two young girls to care for, Perlina Johnson 10 (listed as a pauper) and Cynthia Johnson 8.

In the 1860 census, Isaac is 76, Gertrude is 49, and the two Johnson girls are still with them at ages 19 and 18.

In1860, it is reported that Isaac Pointer was elected as an associate judge of Vigo County, Indiana.
Seven years later, Isaac died at age 84.

In the 1870 census, Gertrude Pointer was nearly 50 years old and had been keeping house for her father for 23 years since Miriam Pointer had died. She and Perlina Johnson, the girl she raised, now 28, were living alone.

Gertrude reportedly built her own cottage on her father’s farm and finally married in the sunset of her life. It was Christmas day 1879 when she married Jeremiah Blocksom a widower about 11 years older than her. He owned 700 acres of land in Honey Creek Township and had children and grandchildren from his earlier marriage. Reportedly, they lived together in Gertrude’s cottage. Gertrude died in 1890 at the age of 80.
