Obituary from the Daily Pantagraph--December 1, 1902

"Mrs. Rebecca Shade, daughter of John and Mary (Shumaker) Shade was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania February 7, 1818. She was married to Henry T. Bower (who died April 3, 1887) on the 25th of November, 1839. Mr and Mrs. Bower lived on rented land in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania until the spring of 1856, when they came by boat to Alton, this state, and lived one year. They then moved north of Brown's Grove, Dale Township near where they lived until the death of Mr. Bower. They bought land and added to the home place until they had a fine farm of 280 acres.

Mrs Bower was the mother of 10 children. Eight, 1 son and 7 daughters, lived to be men and women. The son and 5 daughters are still living. They are J.E. Bower, Mrs. Matilda Stubblefield, Mrs Sarah Davis, Mrs Harriett Skinner, Mrs Ellen James and Mrs Frances Warlow. Mrs Bower has one brother still living, William Shade who lives in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Mrs Bower was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church. She since the death of her husband has made her home with her children who live in this county. She leaves besides her children, 38 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren besides neighbors and old friends who mourn her death."

Funeral notice: "The funeral of Mrs. Rebecca Bower will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from the home of Isaac Skinner. Services at West Twin Grove Church at 11 am. Please omit flowers."

Cause of her death: gangarine and debility (2 mos)
