Choreographer. One of Sweden´s most "Culture exports." Birgit Cullberg was a pioneer in modern dance, and she had the ability to make dance "simple," in a scarse way, that touched audiences round the world. She was an independent thinker, not yielding for imaginative experiments, which made her go into television and video as well. Her experimental visions made her form the renowned dance company "Cullbergbaletten" (The Cullberg Ballet) which has toured the world for many years, and still is. Birgit Cullberg herself, was a globetrotter when it comes to choreography, and worked in Copenhagen, Bayreuth and Milan as well as Teheran, Tokyo and New York. Her works has been performed thousands of times in all over the world. Her debut in 1950 with "Miss Julie," has been followed up with many successes, like "Romeo and Juliet" (1969), "Red Wine in Green Glasses" (1971 Prix d´Italia winner), "Peer Gynt" (TV, 1976), "Dreams of Love and Death" (1980), "ABBA-Ballet" (TV, 1984), and many others. Birgit Cullberg became Honorary Professor of Stockholm University and Commendeure des Arts et Lettres in France. She received several internationals awards and decorations. Birgit Cullberg is a mother to famous dancers Niklas and Mats Ek, and to actress Malin Ek.
