Laura Jean Fowler Caldwell Jones, age 95, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Maggie Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the daughter of the late Jesse Melvin and Zalia Rogers Fowler. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, William Orville "W.O." Caldwell; her second husband, Mark Jones; a son, Jerry Dean Caldwell; two sisters, Lucille Rathbone and Valerie Chambers; and a brother, Rufus Fowler. She retired from American Enka in 1975 as a supervisor with 39 years of service and was a member of Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church where she was the oldest living member. Jean was a special lady who was known for her caring and hard working nature. She was dedicated to both her family and her work as well as her friends, church family, and community. She will be deeply missed and treasured by all who knew her.

She is survived by two sons, William Orville Caldwell, Jr. of Longs, South Carolina and James Daniel Caldwell and his wife, Barbara, of Charlotte, North Carolina; four sisters, Doris Hightower and her husband, J. T. of Clyde, Joyce Henderson and her husband, Charles, of Morganton, Ruth Hawkins of Clyde, and Mabel Alello of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Daniel Gaddy officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.
