Mr. Gallant graduated from Tarleton State University and then Texas A&M University where he served in the Corps. He also served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was discharged with the rank of Major. He served as the Assistant County Agent of Bexar County. Mr. Gallant was a Vocational Agriculture teacher for Medina I. S .D.. He loved sports, basketball being his favorite as he coached several girls high school teams in Medina. He served as Director & President of the Hill Country Telephone Co-Op for 20 years. James was a lifetime rancher on the Gallant Property which was established in 1911. He also classified lambs at the Houston Livestock Show for 15 years, and served as lamb classifier and judge at many area stock shows. James was a member of the original committee who established the Medina Children's Home, and was a faithful member of the Medina United Methodist Church. "Pawpa" loved his family, and especially delighted in his grandchildren. He also loved hunting, fishing, and caring for his livestock.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Oneida Gallant, sister, Thelma Gallant, daughters, Marilyn Watson and husband Tony, and Patricia Harvey and husband Jim; grandsons, Robert Ashley and wife Neita, Mike Harvey and wife Christina, and Brad Harvey and wife Tray; granddaughters Kristina Carter and husband Brad, Joanna Snyder and husband Michael, and Jamie Graham and husband Tony; Great-grandsons, Austin, Ethan, Seth, Alex, and Jacob; and granddaughters, London, Dacey, Sienna, and Sydney Grace.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Archie R; Gallant, infant daughter, Martha Carolyn Gallant, and son-in-law Bob Ashley.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 from 4-6 pm.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 10 , 2011 at 11 AM at Medina United Methodist Church with Pastor Bill Stegemueller officiating.. Interment will follow at Oak Rest Cemetery in Medina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Medina United Methodist Church, and/or a charity of your choice.
