John George went by his second name George. George was the son of David Wilson Elder and his wife Mary Ellen Johnstone.

He married Jennie MacKenzie on February 11th of 1920. In 1924 they lovingly adopted a little girl, Olive June Cheesman. They would rename her Muriel.
