Biography:

Born in Covington, Morgan County, Georgia, the son of Henry Shaw (1775 Halifax, NC– 1856 Newton Co., Ga.) and Dorothy Ann "Dolly" Barnett (1794 Newton Co., Ga. – 1878 Ga.). He married 21 Dec 1848 Victoria Vina Watson (1829 – 1859) and their children included John Hillman Shaw (born about 1850) and his twin (born 1850 and died 1850). After the loss of his wife he married on 13 Oct 1859 in Newton, Ga. to Susannah Susan Russell (1824 – 1878) and they had a son, Greenville Shaw (1860 – 1918). On 6 Mar 1878 in Henry Co., Ga. he married Rhonda Ann Martin (1838 – 1919) and their children included Leonidas Shaw (1878 – 1942) and Millard L. Shaw (1879 – 1942). During the Civil War he enlisted in Covington, Ga. on April 1, 1861 as a Private in Co. F, (Newton Rifles or Newton Rangers) 42nd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee of the Confederate States of America. He took part in the Battle of Vicksburgh and was captured there by the Yankee Army under Grant. He was exchanged and continued to fight in the Battles of Missionary Ridge and Bentonville among others. He surrendered in Greensboro, North Carolina 26 April 1865 at the end of the war.
