Eugene Beck was born the eldest son of Charles and Mary Beck, on September 25, 1867, in Burt County, Nebraska. Here with his three brothers and a sister, he passed his early years and young manhood. He engaged in farming, and had charge of the home place for several years after his father's death. On November 7, 1894, he was united in marriage to Mary Farrens, also a resident of Burt County. Here they lived until 1904, when the family moved to a farm 2 miles south of Winfred, SD, where Mr. and Mrs. Beck have since resided. With the help of his sons, Mr. Beck farmed on a large scale, and has always been regarded as one of the best and most progressive farmers of Lake County. He was a member of the Woodman Lodge for many years.
On last Tuesday evening, August 9, while busy with his usual tasks, he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack, and passed away before help could reach him, at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 15 days.
He leaves to mourn his passing his widow and five sons; Glenn, Charles and Roy all of Winfred; Joe of Kansas City, MO; and Clyde of Vilas, SD. There are 22 grandchildren. Besides his immediate family, he leaves a sister and a brother, Mrs. Lottie Spencer, and Dennis Beck of Missouri Valley, IA, a brother, William of Decatur, NE, and a brother, John of Madison, SD.
Mr. Beck was a firm believer in the Christian faith. He lived by the golden rule of honest dealings and fair living with neighbors and friends. A loving husband, a kind and generous father, an honorable and upright man in all his business dealings with his fellow men, he will be mourned by all who knew him. The first link in a living chain of three generations to be broken, let us think of Mr. Beck, not as one dead, but on some living shore, we hear his glad voice cry, "Say not 'goodnight' but in this brighter clime, bid me good morning."
