He was great great-grandfather of Gerald staggs, father of James N. Staggs, granfather of Calvin Lester Staggs, great-grandfather of Ollie Staggs.
He was one of the soldiers assigned as personal guard of Andrew Johnson, appointed by Abraham Lincoln as governor of Tennessee during the Civil war.
He was assigned to Company A, 10th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, USA.
Being a Union soldier in a confederates state, made his family unpopular with some. Family lore says that his family was forced to relocate due to being burned out.
His death at General Hospital No. 1, in Nashville was not a direct result of battle, but due to dysentery.
Originally buried at College Hill Cemetery and later moved to National Cemetery. College Hill, site of the University of Nashville, is where the 1885 building Lindsley Hall was used as a military hospital and may have been the one where Joseph Staggs died.
He was married to Mary ann McAnally. Their children were: James Naseworth Staggs, Elisha M. Staggs, Docia Staggs, Joseph Staggs, III(Jody), Elmyra Jane Staggs, Henry H. Staggs, Sarah Ella Staggs, William Benjamin Staggs, Andrew Johnson(Governor) Staggs.
