In Auburn, on Sunday, Sept. 20th, after a brief illness, William Cory Esq. Clerk of the County of Placer, aged about 39 years.
Mr. Cory was a native of England, but at an early age came to the United States and grew to manhood, we believe, in the State of Michigan. In the infant days of our State, he sought the golden shores of the Pacific, along with the thousands of young and adventurous spirits who came to win the smiles of fortune. He early took part in political affairs, and was elected to the Assembly on the Whig ticket from this county in 1854, the year of the division of the Democratic party into the Gwin and Broderick factions. He subsequently filled the office of Justice of the Peace, at Michigan Bluff, for several years, at the same time being engaged in the Express and gold dust business. Last year he was elected County Clerk on the Republican ticket-which position he occupied at the time of his decease.
It was our pleasure to form the acquaintance of Mr. Cory in the early days of his residence in the county; and although our political opinions have not been in consonance, yet in all these long years our mutual acquaintance and friendhip has never been marred. We always found him a genial and amiable gentleman upright and honorablein his dealings, and firm and true to his friends. Peace to his remains.
