Obituary:
Hugh Kilpatrick was born August 27, 1832, at New Mills, Scotland, where he resided with his parents. In 1847 his parents moved to America, coming by way of the St. Lawrence River to Rochester, NY. After a residence there of one year, they went to Hastings, Mich., and after a short time moved onto a piece of wild land in Woodland township, Barry county. An older brother of the deceased having preceded the fanily by two years and had purchased the farm on which they lived.

October 4, 1857, he was united in marriage to Eliza D. Grant. To this union were born ten children, of whom four, William, Elmer, Nathan, and Mrs. Frank Cook, survive, besides his wife, twenty-five grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

The family settled on a farm in Woodland and lived there nineteen years. They then moved to a farm near Vermontville, where they lived three years, then came to Emmet county in 1878 and homesteaded the land on which for forty-two years they resided.

Hugh went as a volunteer in the federal army during the Civil War, being a member of company I, 26th Michigan Infantry, and was with the army of the Potomac and was with his regiment when Lee surrendered, having served two years and nine months.

Mr. Kilpatrick was one of the twelve men who organized Carp Lake township and was its first clerk. In early life he was a member of the united Brethren Church and in later years, as there was no church of his choice near, he joined the Methodist Church of which he was a member at the time of his death. He was a member of the Emmet County board of poor commissioners for thirteen years.
His was a long, useful life, and he was always interested in all public affairs.

Mr. Kilpatrick died April 27 at his home in Carp Lake township. The funeral was held April 29 from the home, the Rev. Mr. Preston, pastor of the M. E. Church officiating, and burial in Bliss Cemetery.
