A son of William (1747-1823) and Lydia Crocker Chappell (1747-1841), of Waterford, New London, CT, and Geauga/Lake County, OH. William Chappell was drafted into the Connecticut Line in 1776 and served a year or more in service. He and his wife Lydia shared their home for several years with their son Nathan and daughter-in-law Hannah [Hungerford], according to Hannah's sworn statement, made in assisting Lydia Chappell apply for a military pension based on William's service. (Pension File W4154)
It is not known with 100% certainty that this is the Nathan Chappell who served three weeks in the Connecticut Militia in the War of 1812, as a private under Ezekiel Andrews (place of service not listed), from 6 Aug 1813 to 16 September 1813. However, no other Nathan Chappell is known to have been in that area in that era, and two men who bore familiar family names also served: Gurdon Rogers Jr., as a private under William Palmer from 8 June 1813 to 14 July 1813 at New London, and Ezra Beebe, who also served as a private under Samuel Crowell at New London for the same dates as Gurdon Rogers Jr. [Because of the familiar family names, same place of service, and similar dates, it is reasonable to believe this is the correct East Haddam/Waterford group of people who were listed in the records. Nathan would have been 21 years of age at that time.] - Source: Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the 1-War of the Revolution, 2-War of 1812, and 3-Mexican War; Part II, Record of Connecticut Men Who Served in the Regular Army and the Militia in the War of 1812, Compiled from Rosters of the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., no date.
Ezra Beebe would have been one of his brothers-in-law, and Gurdon Rogers Jr. was a nephew of another B-I-L, Roswell Rogers. The Lake County, Ohio, Genealogical Society's online data for Brakeman Cemetery in Leroy Twp. indicate an illegible War Monument at or near the gravestone of Nathan Chappell. This may have originally been indicative of his War of 1812 service.
He appears to have purchased around 1828 at least one or two 7-acre tracts in Lot 28 of Leroy Twp., adjacent to Lot 27 where his sister Wealthy Lived with her husband Roswell. He purchased 42 acres from Richard Lord in 1830, also in Lot 28. In 1832, Ezra Beebe also bought 100 acres from Richard Lord in Lot -??-.
In the 1830 Census for Leroy Township, Geauga County, Ohio, a woman between the ages of 80 and 90 is listed in the household of Nathan Chappell. This is believed to be Lydia (Crocker) Chappell, his mother. She was 92 in 1839, when she made a deposition in applying for a pension based on the Revolutionary War service of Nathan's father, Willaiam Chappell. Nathan signed one of the affidavits.
In 1832, the Sheriff of Madison County, NY, sold 63 acres of land (adjoining the town of Brookefield) belonging to an Asher Starkweather as partial satisfaction of a debt involving Asher Starkweather, Roswell Rogers, William Rogers, and Nathan Chappell. A judgement in the amount of $360.58 had been awarded in the Supreme Court of Judicature in Jan 1830. Neither these Rogers' nor Nathan Chappell had ever been grantees in a land purchase in that county. Sheriff's deed was dated 7 Jan 1832, recorded in Book "AE," page 91. Winning bidders at the auction were Mary and Eliza Green (or Greentan, per grantor index) of Utica, NY, who evidently had loaned the group money. According to Geauga County records, he was already in residence there at the time of the foreclosure back in New York.
