Bessie Jarrett Byrd, 102, of Warm Springs, Va., died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs, Va. She was born October 23, 1906, in Wise County, Va., the daughter of the late Ward Darlington Jarrett and Emmer Mae Shawver Jarrett. She was married to Duncan McClintic Byrd Sr. who preceded her in death on December 10, 1962. Mrs. Byrd was a graduate of the Virginia State Teachers College, now James Madison University. She was a retired school teacher for Bath County Public Schools after many years of service. She was a member of the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Ladies Circle. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Dolly and Charlie Jackson, of Rockville, Va., Nancy and Wayne Hiner, of Warm Springs, and Diana and Jerry Brinkley, of Salem, Va.; a son and daughterin-law, Hale H. and Patty Byrd, of Ford City, Pa.; a daughter-inlaw, Linda H. Byrd, of Naples, Fla.; a sister, Edith Chamblin, of Fairfax, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Duncan M. Byrd Jr.; and seven brothers. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Charles Reed officiating. Interment will be in the Warm Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Cecil Armstrong, Alan Brinkley, Jeff Cleek, Ray Graham, Mark Hiner, Scott Jackson, Jeff Phipps and Eric Roberts.
