John May served as a U.S. Army veteran, Texas Ranger, and a citizen of the Republic of Texas.

John May was a veteran of the War of 1812 and a Texas Ranger in Shelby County, Texas.
He was born in 1797 in Washington County, Mississippi. While in Mississippi, John joined the United States Army and fought in the War of 1812. He served from 1812 to 1815. John married Elizabeth Bounds in 1828, and they had five children, two of which were born in Mississippi. They were Dempsey H (1829) and James Starling (1832).

After moving to Texas in 1834 or 1835, where he received an 1836 land grant for 1,280 acres in Shelby County, he and Elizabeth had three more children, Lucy (about 1837), William H. (1824), and Mary (about 1845). Sometime prior to 1858, Elizabeth died and was believed to be the first to be buried in the John May (Hooper May) Cemetery.

John served as a Texas Ranger during the Regulator-Moderator War where he worked to keep the peace in East Texas. He was a moderator and a friend to the old settlers of the county as he protected them from the lawless element of the neutral ground era.

May married Martha Davis sometime prior to 1858, and they had four children, John Peter (about 1858), Sarah Josephine (1860), Preston S., and Asa (1864). Martha May died in 1864 and, like John's first wife Elizabeth, was buried in May Cemetery.

John married a third time to Elizabeth Haight. They had two sons, David, Lawson (1865) and Robert (1869). John died in 1873 in Shelby County, Texas.
