Samuel Carey

Samuel Carey, son of Rev. Jonathan and Susannah Carey, was born February 14, 1855, in Hamilton county (sic) Indiana, and passed away February 11, 1942, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Plautz, at the age of 86 years, 11 months ad 27 days.

The family moved to a farm near Ottumwa, Iowa, where he grew to manhood, In the spring of 1878 he came to Nebraska and homesteaded on a farm nine miles south and one mile west of Sutton. In the spring of 1881 he returned to Iowa and was married to Mary Ellen Tomlin, December 22, 1881. They returned to Nebraska in the spring of 1882 in a covered wagon and settled on the farm which he had homesteaded. He broke the sod with an ox team and built his sod house. To this union five children were born, Anna, Arthur, Ella, Willis, and Lizzie. They resided on the place until 1920 when they moved to Ong. He lived there until ill health caused him to make his home with his children. He spent 64 years of his life in Clay county (sic), Nebraska.

He was always a faithful church worker and for many years was a member of the Ong Methodist church (sic) where he will be greatly missed.

Left to mourn his passing are four children, Arthur Carey, of Ong; Mrs. George Plautz, of Edgar; Willis Carey of Sterling, Colorado; and Mrs. Lizzie Gemmer of Edgar; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Wagner of Central City; Mrs. Margaret Overturf, of Ong; and Mrs. Malinda Miller, of Blakesburg, Iowa; two brothers, Joshua Carey of Valley Center, Kansas; and Luther Carey of Noel, Missouri; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Mary, who passed away February 2, 1924, and one daughter Mrs. Albert Moline, who passed away November 13, 1940.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the house and at 2:30 at the church with the Rev. S. W. Longacre in charge.
