John Menefee was a Revolutionary War soldier and the first Judge of Morgan County (then Cotaco County). The tombstone was erected by the DAR after the cemetery was found in the 1960's. The original tombstone was a box-tomb that has fallen in and all that is left is the slab which had covered the tomb. It reads: "Sacred to the memory of John Menefee, who departed this life Feb 24, 1824, A. D. aged 76 years."
John Sutherland married Frances Rhodes; she was part of the Alabama Settlement who went to Texas in 1830 and 1831.
