Mettha was born in Germany and immigrated to the US on May 7 1868 with her husband Jacob Diercks, his daughter Anna, and sons Johann(1862)and Nicolaus(1866). Nicolaus died in 1873 according to family research and the records of Audrey Diercks, Hermann's granddaughter. Mettha gave birth to a girl on July 7 1882 that died next day. She died in 1884 after giving birth to twins on March 3 who died within two days. Her parents are listed on death certificate as Jacob and Nancy Quast. Jacob Diercks and sons moved to Lyman county SD with Bertha following after she turned 18. Her sons John and Herman immigrated to Canada in early 1900's. John died in Canada from smoke inhalation in smokehouse in 1903. Herman and family remained there.
