Mrs. Sheila Ray Johnson, 67, Glencoe, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, after a two-year battle of liver cancer. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Crestwood Chapel. Pastor Donny Patterson and Bro. David Denson will officiate. Crestwood Funeral Home will be directing and burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery.
Sheila was a native of Glencoe and a graduate of Glencoe High School. She was a member of the heavenly choir at North Glencoe Baptist Church and a former member of Glencoe First United Methodist Church. Sheila was a member of Beta Sigma Phi of which she was chosen Woman of the Year in 1979. She retired from Wal-Mart after 18 years and worked part time at Nelson's Downtown Gadsden.
Her smile along with her faith in Christ touched many lives. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, exceptional Nana, unbelievable friend to many and an inspiration to all.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Irene Ray; and brother, Billy Gene Ray.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Rex Johnson; son, Richard (Luanne) Johnson; daughter, Rendi (Jayson) Chambers; grandchildren, Kinsey and Koleman Loggins and Dalton and Bailie Chambers; sister, Betty Widener.
Pallbearers will be Paul Alvis, Joel Johnson, Jimmy Dan Johnson, Jeffery Johnson, Kim Rich and Cecil Sharp.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Shaily Lakhanpal, Dr. Kent Tucker, Dr. Jason Ayers and Pam Richey.
Special thanks to the staff and personnel of Birmingham Hematology & Oncology Assoc., L.L.C. and the nurses and staff of St. Vincent's East in Birmingham.
Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made in Sheila's name to the American Cancer Society (Liver) and/or American Red Cross Tornado Relief Fund.
The family will receive friends today at the funeral home from noon until the hour of service.
