Politician. Patrick Blanchfield was a New Zealand politician who served as a member of the New Zealand Parliament for the West Coast from 1960 until his retirement in 1978. At the age of twenty-one, Blanchfield was elected to the Greymouth Borough Council and also served on the Grey Power Board. He soon joined the Westland branch of the Labour Party. Succeeding Jim Kent in 1960, Blanchfield served as representative for the Westland electorate and later the West Coast electorate from 1872 until his retirement. His frequency of quoting early English and Scottish authors and poets while conducting parliamentary speeches caused him to be well-known around the country. In 1971, he published his works of poetry in his book "The Ballads of a Coaster."
