At the commencement of WW1 George enlisted into the Army at Wood End Near Flixton, becoming Private 24893 in the Manchester Regiment. He was later transferred into the 1st/5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own) as Private 35396.
He was killed in action near Armentieres, France, on the 11th of April 1918, aged 40 years, and was buried at Plot Sp. Mem. A. 12. of the Croix-du-Bac British Cemetery, Steenwerck, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, where the personal inscription on his gravestone reads: "THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT".
He is commemorated on the WW1 War memorial at St Mary the Virgin Church, Davyhulme Borough of Trafford, Manchester.
George's parents both died in 1908; his father on the 6th of November, and his mother on the 29th of December. They were buried at St Michael's Churchyard, Flixton, where George is also commemorated on their gravestone. His memorial reads: "ALSO GEORGE, THEIR ELDEST SON, PTE. 1/5th YORKS. FORMERLY MANCHESTER RGT. APRIL 11th 1918, AGED 40 YEARS. "O LIBERTY, THO THOU SLAY US, WE WILL TRUST IN THEE."
George's Brother; Thomas, is also commemorated on his parents gravestone. He was a Private in the 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment and was killed near Ypres, Belgium, on the 31st of July 1917.
George's youngest brother; Hartley, died aged 26 on the 25th of November 1913, and shares the grave-site with his parents.
