MARGARET HOPFER OBITUARY
Published by The Recorder in Greenfield, MA on May 4, 2022

Margaret K. Hopfer, age 97, died Tuesday April 28, 2022, at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. She was born in N.Y.C., New York in 1924, to William & Catherine (Singer) Dermody. She graduated from Catholic High School in N.Y.C.
Margaret lived in the Bronx, NY for over 50 years, then moved to Dudley, MA., and then to Greenfield, spending the last 7 years at the Millhouse Apts.
After the death of her husband Alfred, at the age of 62, she got a job in Manhattan as a telephone supervisor until age 74 at Reuben Donnelly Co.
An avid reader until her eyesight started failing at age 90, she then switched to audio books listening to over 7 books per week, and over 1000 from the Greenfield Public Library.
At 97, she still cooked her own meals. She loved going out each week to dinner with her family and relished once in a while going to the casino and playing the slot machines. Up to age 97 she did all her own grocery shopping, paid her own bills, ordered her own medicine, and had a very sharp memory for every detail.
Her favorite pastime, other than reading, was the telephone. She would call friends and relatives in CA, FL, NY, SC, VA, and MA throughout the year. A very kind person, she never forgot sending birthday, Easter, Christmas and even Thanksgiving cards, while writing letters to her friends. Always with a smile and a kind word for everyone, she will be greatly missed by all.
She was predeceased by her husband Alfred, her mother and father, sister Elizabeth, brother Walter and Uncle Charlie.
She is survived by her nephew William (Phyllis) Canon of Greenfield; niece, Lorraine Winslow of Dudley; great nephew, John (Norma) Canon; great niece, Helene (Gregory) Winslow of Suffield, CT.; great nephew, Michael Winslow of Lowell, MA.; nephew, Rick Dermody; niece, Kathy Leah; nephew and niece Shawn and Ryan Dermody; and her best friends Rosemary Miklitsch of Conway, SC and Eileen Barber of Greenfield.

A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday May 11, 2022, at 10am at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield. Her ashes will be brought to Fern Croft [Ferncliff] Crematorium in New York to be united with her late husband Alfred.
There will be no calling hours.
Her family would like to thank Baystate Franklin Hospital, Lifepath, Outlook, Community Health Center of Franklin County, Greenfield Public Library, and her caregivers for their kind and tremendous support.
