Mary Waugh Donnelly was born May 2, 1863, the eighth of nine children of Francis John Waugh, Sr. and Ann Kirk Waugh of Ontario, Canada. The family were members of the Church of England. In 1890 when she became the second wife of James Donnelly, a U. S. citizen, Civil War veteran, and Catholic, she also became Catholic. James and Mary had four daughters: Gertrude Mary "Gertie" Donnelly McGilvery, Lillian May "Lillie" Donnelly Gould, Pearl Donnelly (who died of a brain hemorrhage at age 9 in 1906), and Nora Madeline Donnelly Hickey Markle (who lived to be 101, dying in 2000). She was stepmother to Margaret M. Donnelly Bubel.
Mary died at age 68 on July 16, 1931 in Toronto, six years after her husband's death. Both Mary and James are buried in the same grave at Section 18, Row 41, Grave 119 at Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery, him deep and her shallow. The graves seem to be unmarked.
