Sunrise: August 4, 1960 Sunset: December 26, 2020.
He was born to Horacio and Petra (Castro) Borrego in Moorhead MN where they were Migrant workers until 1969 when Horacio got a job at Oldsmobile in Lansing. He was raised on the northside where he attended Lansing Eastern High school. He joined the National Guard and gave all he could in the time he was there, but if you knew Val you knew that wasn't for him. What was for him, were his people. His family. His friends. His nieces, nephews, cousins, second, third, fourth, friend of the fourth's cousins. Brothers from other mothers and sisters from other misters (his words). He loved everyone unconditionally without judgment. Val had his struggles as we are all aware, but it NEVER deterred him from giving a helping hand. He has fixed your cars, he has walked in the snow, he has fed your families all with a smile on his face or a roll of his eyes. But he did it, and you never had to question if he would. He was incredibly talented, a one man show. He could sing, play several instruments and dance like no other. He spoke three languages Spanish, English and Ebonics and was proud to speak all three. He got in where he fit in, he was able to adapt to any surrounding with ease and always made an impression. He had a way of speaking that touched your soul. He was very compassionate and caring, he was real when it called for and he listened when he knew that is what you needed. He always knew just what to say. Can you imagine the party when those gates opened up!?
He really was one of one. We will all miss your messages…
He was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers Eleazar, Oscar and Jose Angel, sister Yolanda Borrego and wife Yolanda Hernandez. He is survived by his children Eleazar Oscar (Andrianna), Natalie and Cristella (Juan) Borrego, Stepchildren Jessie Cisneros and Alicia (Cisneros) Banks. Grand children Adriana Presas, Gabriela (Will) & Benicio Eleazar Borrego, Analicia & Carlitos Valentin Serna and Diego & Keiani Banks as well as his very special Great Granddaughter who was named for him, Valencia Mariana Lagunes. Brothers, Alvino (Linda), Cruz (Kelly), Ricardo and Rey Borrego, sisters San Juanita (Ray Lopez) and Francis (Rudy) Gaytan. Val was close to every one of his many nieces and nephews and they meant the world to him, along with several close cousins that he loved dearly.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, 11:00 a.m., at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Vincent Richardson as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4-8 pm at the Palmer, Bush and Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Holt Chapel and Monday from 10 am until service time at the church.
